Amnesty International: African union failed in achieving security in Darfur
Sudan, Politics, 12/17/2004
In a statement on Thursday, the Amnesty International accused the African Union mission which supervises the cease fire in Darfur of failure, noting that it has not succeeded in protecting the civilians and controlling attacks in this district which is situated to the west of Sudan.
The organization's assistant director of Africa's program Van Deir Burg stressed in a statement that the mission of the African Union has not succeeded in improving security for the civilians and the Union's mission in Darfur could not prevent attacks in this region. He indicated that the deployment of this mission was slow and called for a large scale political support for it.
In the same context, the UN accused the rebel groups in the area of being involved in killing two workers in one British Charity society on Sunday. The spokeswoman for the UN, Radia Ashouri, said that there are indicators on the involvement of one of the rebel groups.
She added that the African Union which sent observers to halt fire in the region will make investigation in the killing of two Sudanese relief workers in the British Save The Children which is considered one of the largest commissions working on the field of circulating food aid in the region.
This came at a time when official at the World Food Program stressed that the fighting in Darfur obstructs the arrival of foodstuffs to some 360,000 citizens.
