Nine Iraqis were killed and other 40 were injured in a bomb explosion yesterday evening in front of the entrances of shrine Imam al-Hussein in Karbala. The Iraqi police said the bomb went off near the western gate of the shrine and targeted Sheikh Abdul Mahdi al-Karbalaee, the secretary of the supreme Shiite clergy in Iraq Ayatullah Ali al-Seistani.

The director of al-Hussein general hospital Dr. Hassan nasrullah said al-Karbalaee was injured in the incident and was admitted to the intensive care unit, while other medical sources said he was hit in his legs.

The spokesman for al-Seistani in Najaf, Hamid al-Khaffaf, said that al-Karbalaee was exposed to an assassination attempt by a bomb implanted on the road between his office and al-Husseini courtyard, which is only 15 meters apart from. Worthy mentioning that al-Karbalaee performs his daily five prayers at al-Hussein shrine.
