US denies contacts with Hamas
Palestine-USA, Politics, 12/16/2004

Washington denied yesterday making any contacts with the Palestinian Islamic resistance movement Hamas, denying information stated by a leading figure in Hamas.

Richard Boucher, the spokesman for the US Department Of State said in a press statement that his country does not work with organizations "classified as terrorists," among which Hamas is.

Chairman of the political bureau of the Hamas movement, Khaled Mashaal said in a TV interview with the BBC on Tuesday that the US and the European union contacted Hamas during the past months, despite the fact that they place it on the list of terrorist organizations.

He also stressed rejecting calls to halt fire, stressing that resistance and negotiations for peace are working side by side and that negotiation without resistance is conducive to surrender but negotiations with resistance leads to genuine peace.

For her part, a spokeswoman for the executive committee of the European Union said that she has no knowledge on contacts between the EU and Hamas.
