Karami says UN resolution 1559 is a means of pressure
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 12/15/2004

Lebanese Prime Minister Omar Karami on Tuesday renewed criticism of UN Security Council resolution 1559 underlining that it the resolutions includes Israeli demands and therefore it poses as a means of putting pressures on Syria and Lebanon to achieve many goals.

In an interview with the Saudi paper al-Riyadh, Karami expressed astonishment over the UN Security Council interference in the interior affaires of an independent state and member of the UN.

"Acceleration to implement the UN Security Council 1559 will lead to affect Lebanon's stability and security and that is not in anyone's interest," he warned.

Karami renewed rebuffing of an international monitoring for the Parliamentary elections in Lebanon saying there were foreign demands to monitor them and this is totally rejected.

"Lebanon is an independent country that respects itself and what is happening is crystal clear to all and seen by everybody. Therefore, there is no need for an international board because it is regarded as affecting our sovereignty and independence," Karami added.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud called again for the necessity of establishing the just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East on the basis of the "land for peace" and the Madrid peace conference reference.

In a dialogue with the Saudi newspaper Okaz, the Lebanese Minister underlined Lebanon's adherence to coordinate with Syria and all the Arab parties in order not to allow an Israeli isolation of any party.

"Lebanon is calling to implement all the UN and the international resolutions related to the Middle East as it urges the UN to restore its credibility over these resolutions," he said.

Hamoud stressed that the Syrian forces presence in the Lebanon issue was to be determined by the Lebanese and Syrian leaderships and to be implemented by the military leadership in accordance with the two states security and interest.

He asked Arabs to get consensus and work to demand the United States, Security Council and Europe to hold responsibilities against the situation in the region and to implement al the international resolutions warning against dealing with others on double standards criterion in the region.
