Abdul Aziz al-Hakim news conference in Damascus

Head of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) Abdul Aziz al-Hakim described as very positive his talks with President Bashar al-Assad on Monday, adding that latest developments in Iraq were discussed in details, particularly the forthcoming elections in the country.

Al-Hakim told a news conference after the meeting that President al-Assad reiterated Syria's well-known historical stances and its continued standing by the Iraqi people.

He added that President al-Assad is aware of what is going on inside Iraq, pointing out that there was an agreement in the points of view when some details on the future of Iraq were discussed.

Regarding the Iraqi elections, al-Hakim said there is a great readiness from the part of the Iraqi people to hold these elections in its set date due to its significance in the restoration of Iraq's sovereignty in terms of land, people and preservation of their national unity.

He pointed out to the important role of Iraq's neighboring countries in maintaining the country's security and stability.
