UN calls for increasing presence in Iraq
Iraq-UN, Politics, 12/14/2004
Both Baghdad and the USA called on the United Nations to increase its presence in Iraq with the aim to help in preparations for the next elections due on January 30th, 2005 and expressed simultaneously optimism over the success of the election process.
Iraq's ambassador to the UN Samir al-Sumeidai said before the UN Security Council that the increased presence of the UN and intensifying its activities in Iraq is a crucial matter, stressing the need that the UN should not resort to any pretext in order to justify its small role in this regard. He expressed optimism over vast participation in the elections despite the calls from certain Iraqi sides to boycott them.
On the other hand, the American ambassador in Iraq John Danforth stressed that the increasing number of UN staff and support is a fundamental matter for the political change in this country despite the difficult security condition.
The UN representative in Iraq Ashraf Qadi expressed relative optimism despite the existence of difficulties at the security level. He said before the UN Security Council he is optimistic because the interim government and the Iraqi people enjoy the will and the desire to negotiate successfully over moving to a democratic, and united Iraq.
