Khartoum proposes federation, Darfur rebels suspend the negotiations
Sudan, Politics, 12/14/2004
Khartoum said it will propose the federal solution in the negotiations which were resumed with the rebels of Darfur amid a stalemate in the negotiation operation, because of the reciprocated accusations of violating the cease- fire between the two sides.
The Sudanese Foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael said in conclusion of the five- member African meeting held in Cairo on Darfur that his government will propose the federal solution as a framework for the political solution in the district.
The Sudanese minister explained in statements prior to leaving for Khartoum that the current round of negotiations in Abuja will discuss the principles of solution reflected in a federal rule for the district, including a constitution that does not contradict with the federal constitution.
Ismael accused Darfur's rebels of converting to "robbery and stealing" when they feel international pressure on the government.
The Sudan's liberation front representative Bahar Ibrahim announced the suspension of negotiations until what he called attacks of the government are stopped. News reports quoted spokesmen for the two Sudanese rebel movement that their negotiators will not leave Nigeria's capital and they are ready for consultations.
