Hawali rejects al-Faqih call for the Saudis to demonstrate
Saudi Arabia, Politics, 12/14/2004
The Saudi scholar Safar al-Hawali has considered the call made by the opposition figure who lives in London Saad al-Faqih for demonstrations in Saudi Arabia as a call for "seditions and destruction."
Al-Faqih who presides over the opposition reform movement had vowed to organize demonstrations in the streets of Riyadh and Jeddah next Thursday, in an official defiance for demonstrations.
In a statement issued on the Internet al-Hawali said that al-Faqih demonstration is rejected, adding that the program of the said opposition figure is "fake tradition" of the campaign which brought back (Ayatullah Rouh al-Lah al-Musawi) al-Khumeini from his French exile and smoothed the way for him to topple the Shah of Iran.
Al-Hawali who was jailed during the 1990s said that reforms in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the Islamic world is required, but it should be according to the Islamic Sharia jurisprudence.
Worthy mentioning that al-Faqih movement organized in 2002 a unique protest in the streets of Riyadh in which the security forces interfered to disperse and arrested 33 of the participants before they were released.
Then, the participants in al-Faqih demonstration called for the release of political prisoners and permitting their political participation.
