Barghouthi withdraws from Palestinian elections run: An American- Israeli campaign against my nomination
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 12/13/2004
The secretary of the Fatah movement in the West Bank, parliamentarian Marwan al-Barghouthi yesterday withdrew from the Palestinian Presidential elections, stressing his support for the nomination of the chairman of the PLO executive committee Mahmoud Abbas ( Abu mazin).
But al- Barghouthi who announced his decision in a message read by the director of his election campaign Ahmad Ghenim in Ramullah in a press conference gave 18 recommendations to the new Palestinian leadership and his words seemed to be overwhelmed with bitterness over what he had been exposed to in detention and criticism he underwent since he had announced his nomination two weeks ago.
In a message read by Ghneim al-Barghouthi, he stressed "support and backing for Abu Mazin the nominee of the Fatah movement" to the elections and described him as "an elder brother and a dear friend worthy of assuming the presidency of the Palestinian leadership."
He stressed that his withdrawal falls in the "light of American- Israeli campaign against my nomination and looming that my nomination will not lead to returning back of the international community to our people and authority."
Al-Barghouthi who is held in cell number 5 in the Israeli Beer Sheba detention center expressed his hope that the new Palestinian leadership will cling to 18 recommendations which he described as observations including among many others clinging to national principles, announcing a united national document, adherence to resistance and Intifada as an option and "merging it with negotiations," not to join partial agreements conducive to occupation and to vow not to sign any agreement that does not include the release of all prisoners.
