Year 2004, the worse year of journalists in 10 years
Iraq, Politics, 12/11/2004

The Committee to Protect Journalists said that 54 journalists were killed in 2004, stressing that this figure is the largest since 10 years.

The organization which takes New York as a headquarters said that Iraq is one of the most risky areas where journalists work where 23 journalists were killed this year in comparison with 2003 when 13 journalists were killed.

The organization's executive director Ann Cooper said that most journalists who were killed in Iraq are Iraqi correspondents on whom armed groups opened fire because of their collaboration with American mass media.

This year also witnessed 22 journalists in Iraq including the Italian journalist Inzo Baldouni who were killed by his kidnappers.

The only American journalist who was killed this year was Paul Kleipinikov ( 41 year old) and was killed by bullets in Moscow in July. He worked in publishing several books on rich families in Russia in the field of press investigations.

The organization said that the second riskiest country in Iraq is the Philippines which witnessed the killing of 8 journalists this year. The organization explained that 48 journalists were killed in the Philippines since the independence of the country.

Year 1994 was considered the worst year for journalists who were killed during performing their duty. In that year 66 journalists were killed during coverage of events and conflicts in Rwanda, Algeria and Bosnia.
