Abul-Gheit: human rights cornerstone for Egypt's development
Egypt, Politics, 12/9/2004

Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit said on Wednesday that respecting human rights in Egypt is one of the cornerstones of Egypt's social, economic and political development.

Speaking to reporters on the occasion of the World Day for Human Rights, Abul-Gheit referred to the issuance of presidential decrees, which annulled martial laws save those deemed important for maintaining public order.

Egypt's establishment of the National Council for Human Rights and the efforts made by the government to make a legislative amendment to prevent journalists' imprisonment for published material are also a case in point, he added.

He also pointed out to the impressive strides made by the government in protecting women and children rights through the national Council for Women and the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood.

Abul-Gheit said that the Egyptian diplomacy has been also active in following up and co-formulating international conventions on human rights.

He said his ministry is currently organizing courses on human rights in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for judges, policeman, prosecutors and media people.
