Marrakech Film Festival comes to maturity, Prince

The Marrakech International Film festival (IFFM) has come to maturity, according to the festival Chairman, Prince Moulay Rachid.

"This year, the International Film festival of Marrakech comes to maturity (..) thanks to a rigorous and imaginative selection of programming in which various world cultures will look at each other and engage a dialogue on all the venues of the festival," wrote the younger brother of King Mohammed VI, in the "Guide of the festival."

This festival, he noted, has become the "window of Morocco, a country asserted in its values and resolute in its options while open to the outside world."

Sixty five films will be screened during the fourth edition of this Festival that is taking place in the famous city of Marrakech (December 6-12). Alexander of US director Oliver Stone was premiered Tuesday night.

14 full-length films have been selected for the official competition "on a purely artistic base looking only for new talents and rewarding the best," according to organisers. Among the films in competition are: "Buenos Aires 100 Km" of Pablo Josˇ Meza (Argentina), "Bown to Bone" of Debra Granik (United States), "El Crimen Perfecto" d'Alex of la Iglesia (Spain), "Hom Rong" of Itthi- Sunthorn Wichailak (Tha•land) and "Tenja" of Hassan Legzouli (Morocco).

The jury, is composed of 11 members and is chaired by the British director, Sir Alan Parker. The films will be projected in 5 locations in Marrakech, including the famous popular square of Jemaa El fna.

A selection of films, will be shown out of competition namely "Le grand voyage" of Isma•l Ferroukhi (Morocco) and "Le plus beau jour de ma vie" of Julie Lipinski (France).

The IFFM paid tribute to Claudia Cardinale (Italy), Sean Connery (Scotland) and Youssef Chahine (Egypt).
