Iraq-Syria, Politics, 12/8/2004
Iraq's Interim Vice-President Ibrahim al-Jaafari underlined the Syrian leadership's keenness on Iraq's unity and safety.
In a news conference Tuesday, Jaafari said that his talks with President Bashar al-Assad and Syrian senior officials dealt with many issues of common interest, adding that the two sides' viewpoints were similar regarding the issues raised.
"We look forward to Syria's continued support because the current situation in Iraq requires more cooperation between Iraq and the neighboring countries, particularly Syria who seeks to preserve Iraq's security and stability ...We, in turn, are committed to preventing Iraq from being a source of tension for the neighboring countries," he added.
He also pointed out to the issues raised on the Iraqi arena, particularly the forthcoming election which he described as a transitional situation that would contribute to achieving security in Iraq, calling on all Iraqis to participate in the election.
