Nazif vows to achieve economic reform in two years
Egypt, Politics, 12/3/2004
Egypt's Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif vowed to achieve economic reforms within two years, saying that the government was resolved to meet its commitments.
Addressing representatives of foreign media in Cairo Wednesday night, Nazif said the mission of his government is to "accelerate the development process."
The gathering was attended by ministers of Home Trade, Finance, Foreign Trade and Industry, Education, Communications and Youths.
It was also attended by the British, Pakistani, Hungarian and Romanian ambassadors to Egypt, as well as by the governors of Cairo and Qalyoubiya.
In his speech, Nazif said he is confident of Egyptian potentials, including natural resources and a human base that would help achieve the desired goals.
Nazif said his government is hopeful that investment will be the front-runner in the coming stage. He vowed to work on "changing minds" and trends with the aim of creating an atmosphere that would lure more investments into Egypt.
In reply to questions by attending journalists, Nazif said "there is a growing feeling among Egyptians that the current investment atmosphere should be changed, but it is going to take some time," Nazif said, affirming that his government would continue to opt for "transparency."
Asked about the would-be victims of economic reforms, he said the government will keep a close eye on "poor" Egyptians, while addressing economic reforms.
He said that as part of reforms, the focus should be on positive points. Within this context, points of weakness may be ignored but not completely.
