Moroccan PM calls for Arab unified coalition
Regional-Morocco, Politics, 12/3/2004

Moroccan prime minister, Driss Jettou, called in Marrakech on Wednesday, to "establish an Arab unified coalition based on the same religious, linguistic, cultural and civilizational references."

Mobilizing the Arab nation's competences and unifying its position would turn the region into an influencing economic block at the regional and international scales, Jettou told the third conference of Arab Thought Foundation (Dec. 01-04), themed "Arabs between the culture of change and change of culture."

Change can only be realized through the adoption of deep internal reforms taking into account the specificity of each country, he said, noting that Morocco is aware that such reforms are the best means to improve its political, economic and social situation.

The Moroccan prime minister said the promotion of liberties and consolidation of democracy, pluralism, gender equality and women integration in politics is a key step to improving the image of Arab peoples and regimes before the international public opinion.

He added it is important to define dysfunctions in the Arab states because the improvement of Arab regimes image goes necessarily through the consolidation of the freedom of speech and liberalization of all realms related to information and thought in all their forms.

As long as we remain prisoners of the current juncture marked by individualism and political and economic pulverization, the Arab states will be incapable of highlighting its important economic potentials and concretising the aspirations of its people.

Jettou recalled that king Mohammed VI has launched a project to establish a democratic and modern society that clings to its national identity and sacred values, while opening up on its regional and international environments.

He said, however, he is convinced that Morocco's future depends on building a solid Maghreban block and establishing a strong Arab grouping.
