Moroccan speaker leaves Algiers after meeting with President Butaflika
Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 12/1/2004

The speaker of the Moroccan House of representatives (lower parliamentary chamber), left Algiers, on Tuesday, after taking part in the African parliaments union gathering, and meeting Algerian president, Abdul Aziz Butaflika.

Abdelouahed Radi held a lengthy session with the Algerian president who asked him to convey his greetings to King Mohammed VI.

Radi, who was leading a large delegation of MPS, noted that Morocco is well ahead of the countries regarding all the issues debated at the Algiers session of African parliaments, citing governance, women issues and promotion of a fair international trade.

Morocco, which has never experienced the single party system, has always been endowed with elements, means, structures and traditions that promote good government, including pluralism, opposition press and a public opinion, said the speaker in a statement to MAP before leaving the Algerian capital.

On women issues, Radi stressed that the kingdom, which has enforced a new family code and counts 35 women in the parliament, is considered as an example.

Regarding world trade, he recalled that it was in Morocco in 1994 that the conference that gave birth to the World Trade Organization (WTO) was held.

The African parliamentary union is made of 40 member-parliaments.
