Iraqi political moves in preparations for the elections
Iraq-Jordan, Politics, 12/1/2004

On the sidelines of political efforts to prepare for the Iraqi elections due by the beginning of 2005, the interim Iraqi prime minister Eyad Allawi arrived in Amman, Jordan, in order to convene meetings with Iraqi figures living there and convincing them to take part in the electoral process.

Iraqis living in Jordan said that Allawi will be meeting with several political figures including tribal chieftains in Iraq, especially the governorate of al-Anbar to the west of Iraq. However, they ruled out that Allawi will meet with former officials in the Saddam Hussein's regime living in the Kingdom.

Allawi is due to meet with 120 Iraqi figures in exile in a conference in Amman to be held on December 8th after his arrival back from his visit to Germany and Russia. A source at the Iraqi embassy in Amman said that an official delegation composed of three ministers including the minister of planning Mahdi al-Hafez is accompanying Allawi in his visit.

In the course of preparations for the elections, the Shiite will announce today a list of 200 candidate for the Iraqi elections to be most likely supported by Ayatullah Ali al-Seistani, according to Shiite political sources.
