Al-Aqsa groups supports Abbas nomination for presidency
Palestine, Politics, 11/29/2004

Al-Aqsa groups stemmed from the Fatah movement yesterday announced support for the decision taken by the Fatah movement to nominate Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazin) as chairman of the PLO to the Palestinian Presidential elections due on January 9th, 2005.

In a statement the group said "we do announce our adherence and full support to Abu Mazin on whom we see a reflection for the national will and continued efforts to re-arrange the Palestinian house so as to foil all enemy schemes aiming at implanting sedition of internal conflicts among the Palestinians." The groups called for " continued preservation of the national principles to return, independence and establishing a Palestinian state."

The group also stressed the "need of deepening and enhancing the principles of democracy in the Palestinian society in general and at the level of the Fatah movement in particular, and implementing the democratic trend at all levels of the movement so as to modernize leading commissions and maintain a genuine reform as well as establishing the society of justice and equity and the supremacy of law." The group also stressed the need of "lining up before achieving the rights of the Palestinians to halt all forms of aggression against the Palestinians as well as releasing all Palestinian prisoners and detainees in the Palestinian jails as an introduction to any serious attempt to open up the political process once again."

The revolutionary council of the Fatah movement on Thursday and in a meeting held in Ramullah in the West Bank decided to nominate Mahmoud Abbas for the post of the chairman of the Palestinian authority in the elections of January 9th, 2005 in succession of Arafat who died on November 11.

On the other hand, al-Aqsa group appreciated the decision taken by the revolutionary council of the Fatah movement to set August 2005 as a date to convene the movement's general conference. The conference which was announced with the aim to renew the leading cadres of the Fatah movement is the first since the conference which was held in August 1989 in Tunis.
