UN Committee and the Syrian Golan
Syria-Israel, Politics, 11/26/2004

The UN General Assembly's Committee for the Special Political Issues and Eradication of Colonialism adopted a resolution titled "The Occupied Syrian Golan" as part of discussion on an item submitted by the ad hoc Committee on Investigation into Israeli Practices against residents under rights.

The resolution, taken by landslide majority overnight, was only voted against by Israel with the abstention of 10 nations, including the U.S.

The Committee asserted that Israel's 1981 imposition of its laws and jurisdiction on the occupied Golan is null and void, and expressed deep concern over continued occupation of the Golan.

The resolution also stressed that seizure of other country's land by force contravenes international laws and the UN Charter. It called on Israel to abide by the Geneva Convention on the protection of civilians in occupied territories at time of war.

The Committee called on Israel to stop trying to impose its identity cards by force on the Syrian citizens in the occupied Golan, and to end its acts of repression perpetrated against them.

Following the vote on the resolutions regarding item No. 76, Syria's Permanent Representative at the U.N., Faissal al-Miqdad, thanked the nations which voted for the resolutions, particularly the motion on the occupied Syrian Golan.

Miqdad said in a statement that with these resolutions the international community reiterated commitment to the legitimate rights of peoples and the total rejection of occupation, thus sending a clear-cut message to Israel to end its occupation of the Arab territories and the Syrian Golan and to desist from its inhuman practices in those territories.

The statement said Syria frequently expressed commitment to the just and comprehensive peace, and launched with the other Arab states a peace initiative, stretching out its hands for the resumption of peace negotiations while Israel reacted with more intransigence and insistence to continue with the policy of deceit and deception.
