Shara confers with Powell at Sharm al-Sheikh

Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara met Tuesday morning the US Secretary of State Colin Powell in the Egyptian Red Sea Resort of Sharm al-Sheikh.

Talks during the meeting dealt with the latest developments in the region, particularly in Iraq and the occupied Palestinian territories. Both sides stressed the necessity of holding Palestinian comprehensive elections that lead to launching the peace process reaching a just and comprehensive peace in the region and on all tracks.

On Iraq, both sides expressed hope that the Conference of Sharm al-Sheikh will be a starting point to help Iraq overcome its current situation.

In this context, Minister Shara expressed Syria's deep annoyance over what is going on in Iraq, calling for a stop to attacks on civilians. Both sides also underlined the significance that the elections will take place in all Iraqi cities.

The bilateral relations between Syria and the US, and the necessity of continuing communications between both countries to improve those relations were also discussed.

Present at the meeting were Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed al-Mualem, Syrian Ambassador in Cairo, US Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East Affairs William Burns.
