Press: King's tour to South America to bolster political, economic ties
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 11/23/2004
The five-nation tour King Mohammed VI of Morocco is to start Tuesday in South America made the headlines of Tuesday's newspapers which laid emphasis on this first ever tour to the region by the monarch since his accession to the throne in 1999, and which is meant to boost political and economic relations.
The tour which includes Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Chili and Argentina is aimed at "consolidating cooperation and friendship with Latin America and create a genuine political and economic partnership with its countries," wrote L'Opinion daily.
The newspaper deems that the accords to be concluded with the five south American countries on this occasion "will give a new impetus to trade and economic relations between Morocco and its south-American partners and will boost investments."
For "Liberation" daily, the visit heralds a "fresh partnership with south America" whose relations with Morocco have been boosted since the ascension of King Mohammed VI to the throne.
"Liberation" believes that the democratic evolution of these countries as well as in Morocco has contributed much to this dynamic, especially that a special focus is given to South-South relations.
This is a "journey for the future" and the "occasion to strengthen economic and political links with a region that was pushed for so long to the background of Morocco's diplomatic priorities."
"Morocco's relations with Latin American states have never reached a level that would enable the development of bilateral mechanisms of political consultation or to create a favorable environment for investments," noted the paper, which hopes the royal visit will create ripe conditions for the development of a new partnership.
Similarly, "L'Economiste" opines that South America will be a "business destination" in this tour, pointing out that a strong business delegation and representatives of professional associations will take part in the visit.
