Human Rights Watch calls on the UN to impose sanctions on Khartoum
Sudan, Politics, 11/16/2004

The Human Rights Watch organization in charge of defending human rights on Monday called for imposing sanctions on Sudan especially in the field of weapons because of the "continued violence atmosphere " in Darfur district which has been witnessing a civil war.

A 43 page report by the organization under the title "If we return back home we will die" said that the Sudanese government continues terrifying citizens. The reports says about the attacks which took place in October, that the government in particular continued using military helicopters in launching attacks on civilian targets and fighting and displacement are still continuous in southern Darfur.

One of the participants in writing the report, Jemeira Ron, notified a press conference in Nairobi that "the danger now lies in that racial cleansing will be intensifiedÉ The current situation in which the government says it ensures security is just a scandal." The report said that racial cleansing in Darfur includes "enforced migration of individuals and preventing them from returning back home safely."

He said that the government forces raid the camps using tear gas in order to force the refugees to leave for other areas but not their homes. The organization said in its report that "Sudan promised to try every and each member of the Jangaweid Arab militia organization which stands in support of the government and is accused of committing violations in Darfur against African citizens.
