Message from King of Morocco to Zimbabwe President
Morocco-Zimbabwe, Politics, 11/10/2004

Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, conveyed on Monday a message from King Mohammed VI to President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.

The royal envoy to West and Central African heads of state reviewed with the Zimbabwean President the "dynamic and proactive vision" of the Moroccan sovereign regarding various problems hampering the African integration. He stated that it is within this vision that Morocco is committed to the peaceful settlement of all the conflicts in Africa, mainly the Sahara dispute, reiterating Morocco's commitment to its sovereignty over the Sahara and to dialog and negotiation to put an end to the artificial conflict created by the Algeria-backed separatist movement "Polisario." The latter is seeking to separate the Moroccan Southern provinces known as the sahara from the rest of the country. The former Spanish colony was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid Accords signed with Spain and Mauritania.

He explained that the Moroccan monarch's vision seeks to restore neighborliness ties between countries of the continent on the basis of mutual respect and promotion of peace and solidarity, said a communiquŽ of the Moroccan ministry of foreign affairs and cooperation.

The Moroccan official also affirmed Morocco's will to promote its relations with Zimbabwe and with all East and Central African countries, calling for the revision of the legal framework that regulates these ties and to expand cooperation to priority sectors in the two countries.

The royal envoy had earlier visited Tunisia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Swaziland, Botswana, Malawi, and Lesotho. He conveyed similar messages to the heads of state of these countries.
