Morocco-Algerian dialogue inescapable to settle Sahara dispute, ambassador
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 11/10/2004
Moroccan ambassador to Venezuela, Brahim Hussein, said the settlement of the Sahara conflict should be inescapably reached through dialogue between Algeria and Morocco.
Brahim Hussein told the Channel 8 TV "the point now is to seek a political, just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution to the dispute, in the framework of the UNO and in the respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Morocco."
He stressed that peace and calm prevail in the Moroccan Southern provinces, like any other part of the kingdom and the Sahrawis feel perfectly integrated in the Moroccan society.
Speaking of the Polisario, a movement backed by Algeria and claiming the separation of the Southern provinces from the motherland, Brahim said the secessionist group is merely a creation of Algeria and does not represent anyone "but itself," stressing that Sahrawis are Moroccans and the Polisario "is not in Morocco, but in the Algeria territory."
He called for the release of the Sahrawis and others held in the Polisario camps, close to the Algerian town of Tindouf (Southwest), so they can freely go back to their countries, namely Algeria, Mauritania, Mali and Morocco.
The Moroccan ambassador said Algeria created the movement and has been helping it since Morocco retrieved its Southern provinces in 1975 and providing it with financial, material, military, diplomatic and logistical aid. Brahim Hussein denounced the disinformation campaign conducted in Venezuela by the Polisario that is trying to make believe the so-called Sahrawi republic (SADR) enjoys any legitimacy, recalling that many misled Latin-American country withdrew recognition to the "phoney" SADR.
