Al-Shara meets Iranian president on conditions in the region
Syria-Iran, Politics, 11/10/2004

Syria's President Sayed Muhammad Khatami of Iran received Tuesday Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara who handed him a message sent by President Bashar al-Assad on the latest developments in the region.

Talks during the meeting dealt with the ongoing developments in Iraq and the occupied Palestinian lands in addition to the friendly relations between Syria and Iran.

Later, an official Syrian- Iranian discussion session was held between Minister Shara and his Iranian counterpart Kamal Kharrazi in the presence of Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed al-Muaalem, the Syrian Ambassador in Tehran and a number of senior Iranian Foreign Ministry officials.

Both sides resumed their talks during an Iftar ( Fast breaking ) banquet held by Minister Kharrazi in honor of al-Shara and the accompanying delegation.

Following the bilateral talks, Ministers Shara and Kharrazi told reporters that talks during the meetings dealt with the latest developments, particularly in Iraq and the occupied Palestinian lands.

They added that viewpoints were identical on the importance of coordination between both countries during the coming conference of Egypt's Sharm al-Sheikh on Iraq to achieve outcomes that meet the Iraqi people aspirations, particularly keeping Iraqi territorial integrity and assuring the withdrawal of the foreign troops from Iraq.

In this context, the two sides expressed desire to cooperate with the neighbouring countries and the other international sides concerned to exert every possible effort that helps the Iraqi people overcome the current conditions.

Minister Shara, for his part, said the new developments Iraq is witnessing and the attacks on the Iraqi city of Falluja were the most important points in the discussions held with the Iranian officials.

He expressed regret over continuing the military attacks on Iraq, saying "as we condemned the attacks against Najaf city, we also condemn the attacks on Falluja and what they left behind of killings and destruction."

On the Palestinian situation, both sides stressed the necessity of preserving the Palestinian national unity as it is the basic pillar for the Palestinian people steadfastness and to restore their legitimate rights.
