Ninety percent of Algerians do not care about Polisario, Algerian politician
Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 11/9/2004
Almost all the Algerian people do not care about the Polisario, and the Sahara issue is a matter of regimes, said Said Saadi, former Algerian minister and secretary general of the opposition RCD ( for Culture and Democracy).
The Algeriqn politician told "La gazette du Maroc" daily over 90% of Algerians do not care about the Polisario, stressing that the Sahara issue is cyclic issue and a matter of (Algerian) regimes.
He argued that the Sahara issue is used by the Algerian successive regimes to veil economic and social hardships. "One always needs smoke to hide disappointing things," he went on.
Algeria pockets around $ 50 billion of hydrocarbons, but nothing is seen on the ground, he deplored before voicing worries over the return in Algeria of the "social Islamism."
Algeria has been extending financial, political and diplomatic support to the Polisario separatists which claim the separation of the Sahara, Moroccan southern provinces, from the rest of Morocco, while at the same time pretending that it has a neutral role in the issue. The Sahara was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid accord with Spain, the former colonial power.
