Syria works to scrap US accusations of money laundry
Syria-USA, Politics, 11/9/2004
Syria's Minister of Finance Mohammed al-Hussein on Monday expected a new round of talks to be held with the US financial officials as to follow up dialogue aimed at solving the standing problem with US financial accusations of money laundering.
"I predict a new round of talks to be held as to solve the standing problem over US accusations to the Commercial Bank of Syria that has been concentrated on money laundering. This will occur on the sidelines of the Middle East and North African countries meeting in Bahrain this month," the Minister told al-Thawra newspaper.
He considered Bahrain's meeting as an opportunity to complete dialogue with the US Treasury Department as part of the current dialogue underlining that the Commercial Bank of Syria was not involved in any money laundering operations.
"The issue of accusations must not be isolated from political circumstances but they are not activated by the US government; the matter that can give a great significance to the dialogue with the aim of finally scraping them," the Minister of Finance noted.
He emphasized that Syria was keen on scrapping the name of the Commercial Bank of Syria from these accusations because they were damaging to us psychologically, morally and even materially.
