A message from al-Assad to Mubarak on regional issues
Egypt-Syria, Politics, 11/8/2004

President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt received on Sunday the Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara who handed him a message sent from President Bashar al-Assad on the latest developments in the Arab region.

Talks during the meeting dealt with the latest developments in the region, particularly in Iraq and the occupied Palestinian lands, and issues of mutual concern.

Following the meeting, al-Shara and his Egyptian counterpart Ahmad Abu al-Ghait held a press conference in which al-Shara said this visit comes in the framework of consultations and exchanging opinions between the two Presidents al-Assad and Mubarak which aim at finding a joint vision vis-a-vis the ongoing challenges.

Concerning the conference on Iraq which will be held in Egypt's Sharm al-Sheikh at the end of the current month, Minister al-Shara said that the importance of this conference comes from the fact that it might help Iraq improve its conditions, particularly improving the security situation.

"Talks with President Mubarak also dealt with the peace process.. US President Bush recently focused on the peace process and how to revive it, as well as British Premier Tony Blair had considered reviving peace process as one of the priorities of the British policy.. and this is a positive development," al-Shara added.

On the Palestinian situation in light of the medical condition of President Yasser Arafat, al-Shara stressed that the Palestinian national unity is a pivotal and important matter, and it is the guarantee to preserve the Palestinian rights.

On the UN resolution 1559, Minister al-Shara said that this resolution and the UNSC statement on it have nothing to deal with Syria or Lebanon, while the UN Secretary General report, al-Shara added, is subject to discussion.

On the situation on the Syrian-Iraqi borders, he stressed that this issue was very exaggerated and "We have reached an agreement of cooperation between the two interior ministries in Syria and Iraq, and it will be signed soon when the Iraqi Interior Minister comes to Syria during a visit," al-Shara added.

For his part, the Egyptian Foreign Minister said that talks between al-Shara and President Mubarak focused on issues of mutual concern, particularly the situation in the Middle East, Iraq and Palestine
