Syria's ambassador in the UN highlights developments
Syria-UN, Politics, 11/6/2004

Syria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations on Friday said reactivation of the UN role is depending on the respect of its charter and some great powers bouncing back from the international law violations.

In an interview by al-Thawra newspaper in New York, Faisal Miqdad said the war in Iraq has created a deep split in the international community as it posed as a big challenge to the UN.

" We don't think healing will come back to the international community and force will return to the UN and its charter but through reiterating on the respect of the UN charter and the abiding by the international resolutions with all what it means of adherences," the Syrian ambassador said.

He noted that talking about surpassing this split would remain just words if powers that are breaching the international law had not retreated from its policies and called in particular for not waging into military adventures against any country in the world with no objective justification.

The Syrian ambassador noted that the Arab region has become one of the world's areas that the double standard policy is mostly applied on.

" There are hundreds of decisions issuing by the UN General Assembly that Israel has not complied with due to the US backing to its challenge of these resolutions while there are tens of decision adopted by the UN Security Council calling Israel to cancel the law of joining the occupied Golan still unimplemented," Miqdad said.

He underlined that all these have been done because of the unjustified protection of the US to Israel either in the UN Security Council or in any other international forum.
