New health setback for Arafat, doctors make new tests
Palestine, Politics, 11/4/2004

The Palestinian delegate to France Laila Shaheed said that the health condition of the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat "had a set back" and that the French doctors treating him in Percy military hospital in Klamar near Paris will be able today ( Thursday) to specify the reason behind this set back.

Shaheed said that Arafat's health is not in immediate danger. She added " Also, several positive developments in Arafat's health happened " during the two past days. She indicated that he had followed the American presidential elections.

One Palestinian official in Paris announced that the Palestinian president was taken yesterday to the intensive care unit in Percy military hospital where he has been treated since 6 days following the deterioration in his health conditions.

One official accompanying Arafat asked to be anonymous said that "President Arafat is in the intensive care unit since Wednesday morning." Another official said that he is " tired but his situation is stable," stressing that transporting Arafat to the intensive care unit does not mean his life is in danger.

Worthy mentioning that the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat ( 75 year old) was admitted to Percy military hospital in Klamar to the west of Paris on October 29th on board of a French military plane to receive medical treatment after the deterioration of his health condition.

French doctors announced on Tuesday that Arafat is responding to the treatment and ruled out he has leukemia.

On the other hand, the Israeli foreign minister Silvan Shalom said on Wednesday that Israel should be prepared for the likely death of the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Shalom explained that "we follow up with great interest this issue and our objective is to be prepared if he dies. But it is early to talk about his burial."
