Three opposition members were accused of involvement in coupe attempt

Judicial sources in Nouakchott announced that three Mauritanian opposition figures were accused yesterday including former president Muhammad Khouna Weld Hedala of involvement in financing a coupe. This was in the course of investigation on three presumed coupes foiled by the government during the 15 past months.

The lawyer of the convicted persons said that Hedala who assumed the authority ( from 1980- 1984) and the opposition figures Ahmad Weld Dada and Sheikh Weld al-Harma were accused of "involving in financing a coupe aimed at toppling the constitutional regime by means of force."

On the other hand, judicial sources said that Lt. Muhammad Elamine Weld al-Wa'er who was arrested on August 9th over being involved in a coupe attempt against President Mu'aweya Weld al-Taye of Mauritania, was brought before the same judge and was then sent to the prison in Wad al-Naqa ( 50 Km to the east of Nouakchott.

In a recording broadcast by the official media, al-Wa'er admitted his involvement in a coupe set to be carried out on August 9th during a visit which was due by Wedl al-Taye to France. The officer explained that he had moved in collaboration with Saleh Weld Hanana, the master mind of the three coupes during 15 months, on which the authorities said that Libya and Burkina Faso are involved in.

The number of detainees held in Wad al-Naqa in the framework of the three presumed coupes foiled by the government reached 156 including Weld al-Wa'er.
