Trial of Kurds and two students resumed in Syria
Syria, Politics, 11/2/2004

The Syrian judiciary has resumed the trial of 15 Kurds who were detained during the bloody confrontations which took place in March and two students who were accused of standing against "goals of the revolution."

In a new trial session on Sunday, the state security court witnessed the trial of the Kurds who are accused of "acts of chaos and devastating of state establishments, inciting sectarianism and civil war." One of the defendant's lawyer said that witnesses said before the court that the sued persons are not guilty over accusations addressed to them and they were not involved in the said acts of chaos because they were then at their place of work.

Lawyer Khalil Matouk said that this covert trial lacks the simplest conditions of justice because relatives of the convicted persons and journalists were not permitted to attend the session. The trial was postponed until November 28th.

The sued persons were detained following the incidents took place on March 2003 in Qamishli, al-Hassaka, Aleppo and Damascus and resulted in killing and injuring scores.

In the same context, the same court continued on Sunday considering the files of the two students Muhammad Bashir and Muhannad al-Dibs "of disseminating information violating the general order" and the goals of the revolution.

The court decided to postpone the trial of the two students who face life- imprisonment penalty in case they are convicted, until November 11.

The two students were detained with other nine colleagues following a sit-in in Aleppo (north Syria) in protest of a decree issued by the authority that ends the Government's job guarantees to graduates of engineering faculties.

On the other hand, the security forces in al-Hassaka city to the north east part of the country arrested 12 persons who took part in a demonstration demanding punishment for the killers of two Assurians. The Democratic Assurian organization said that all the detainees are from "the Assurian community."
