Libya, Economics, 11/1/2004
The upper part of the off shore rig (Sabratha) was installed Sunday early morning. The rig regarded one of the main components of the mega strategic West of Great Jamahiriya Gas Project," JANA said yesterday adding "through which 1000 million cubic feet of natural gas and nearly 65 thousand barrel of crude oil and densities would be produced daily."
The installation process was attended by the chairman and members of the Board of the Eni international Gas company, Great Jamahiriya branch, a number of experts and technicians working in the project as well as a number of Libyan oil engineers .
Chairman of the Board of Eni, Eng. Foad Krekshi told Jana reporter that the upper part installed today on the structure of Sabrata rig, weighs 12 thousand tons, it is 80 by 50 meters and 50 meters high, and consists of five floors.
It was installed by a special forklift in one move. The operation is considered the first of its kind in the world in lifting such weights.
JANA added "The work achieved today considered the main pillar of the second stage of the West of Great Jamahiriya Gas Project. Having the rig fixed early this month, today's installation of this Korean manufactured component which provides for the treatment of gas , and condensates, is complementary to the previous installation. The rig would be connected to 26 producing wells, through which liquids will be separated from gas, and be transported through Sea pipelines to the industrial complex in Mellitah, where the final treatment takes place and impurities will be removed. The production is to satisfy the local market, and export the surplus to the European market through the under the sea pipeline linking Great Jamahiriya with Italy, he added."
The report added "One of the objectives of the project was to provide an opportunity to develop other discoveries in the region, as the gas produced by the 20 km away alBouri oil field which production started in 1988 would be utilized by this new rig, he explained."
JANA said "The rig will be ready next June to receive and produce gas and condensates with a production capacity of 600 mcf of pure gas and about 35,000 barrels of condensates, besides 400 million cubic feet of gas and 30,000 barrels of crude oil, he added."
The report said that the "Sabrata off shore rig was installed at the beginning of this month 180 meters deep into the sea, at its location in Gas of the Sea of Peace field, 110 klm north west of Tripoli to constitute the pillar of West of Great Jamahiriya Gas Project, viewed as further to the enormous great achievements realized to the Libyan people by the great al Fateh Revolution."
