Saudi Arabia detains three and finds weapons in Riyadh
Saudi Arabia, Politics, 11/1/2004
The Saudi Arabian authorities said it had detained three suspects and found explosives and ammunition during a security operation in the capital Riyadh.
In a statement issued by the Saudi News Agency, the ministry of the interior said that "in one of the breaking in operations in a crowded residential areas, the security forces found 20 explosive instruments, 23 mortars and 33 shelling." It also added that one pistol and two machineguns were found in addition to photographing and telecommunication equipment.
The government stressed that these acts of detention are part of the campaign against what it called "the mislead group." A phrase often used to describe Islamists gunmen who launch attacks against westerners and often the security forces.
However, the statement of the ministry of the interior did not disclose the identity of the detained and their importance in the network of the gunmen.
This campaign came after the German embassy in Riyadh warned last week against the possibility that Islamists gunmen are planning to detonate a booby trapped car in the downtown of the city during Ramadan month.
