Syrian foreign exports up 6.8% yearly

The volume of Syria's exports increased to 59 billion Syrian pounds in 2001 compared with 40 billion Syrian pounds in 1993-1995, i.e with annual growth estimated at 6.8%, al-Thawra daily said Thursday.
The daily added that the latest Agricultural Policies National Center's report points out that improvement in exports during the 2000 and 2001 leads to achievements of a positive trade balance due to the economic overture policy and amendments of some laws and legislations that Syria has adopted.
The report stressed that Syria's most important markets for export are in the EU and Arab states since 80% of the Syrian exports goes to Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Turkey in addition to the EU countries, the daily underlined.
Regarding the agriculture exports, they constitute about 32% of the total value of the Syrian general exports. The most important products are raw cotton, sheep, tomato, lemon, wheat, grapes, olive oil and cumin, the daily said.
The report concluded that trade contribution to total production increased to 49% in 2001 compared with 45% a year before, adding that the standard trade balance improved by 5.1% in 2001, while the total exports increased to 59.2 billion Syrian pounds in 2001, the daily said. Tomader
