Lebanese new foreign minister assert role of relations with Syria
Lebanon, Politics, 10/29/2004

Lebanon's new Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud said Thursday that Syria offered sacrifices to Lebanon to restore its role in the region, adding that Syrian-Lebanese relations are deep and strong.

During a meeting with Lebanese former foreign Minister Jean Obeid, Hammoud hailed the Syrian role in Lebanon which preserved security and stability.

Obeid, for his part, also appreciated the strong cooperation between Syrian and Lebanese foreign ministries, particularly vis-a-vis the UNSC resolution No.1559 which is considered by Lebanon and Syria as an intervention in the Lebanese internal affairs.

Meanwhile, the Regional Leadership of al-Baath Arab Socialist Party in Lebanon underlined the importance of backing the national stances of Lebanese President Emile Lahoud, and supporting Syria to enhance Lebanon's steadfastness and confront the foreign dangers.

In a statement in Beirut, the Regional Leadership referred to the volume of challenges and responsibilities assumed to the newly-appointed Lebanese government, particularly on the living standard situation.

Also on Thursday, Lebanese parties and national organizations said it is very important to adhere to resistance and the unity of track and destiny with Syria.

In a statement following a meeting in Beirut, the parties called on the Lebanese new government to put a plan to confront the resolution 1559 and solve economic and social problems.
