Syria, Politics, 10/28/2004

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday chaired a meeting of the Economic Group at the Government to debate areas of enhancing the Syrian economy in light of the Syria-EU Partnership Association and the general policy direction.

At the beginning of the meeting, President al-Assad was briefed on the current economic situation by the Chairman of the State Planning Commission.

The briefing included points of strength and weakness of the Syrian economy and suggestions on the general goals of the economic policy during the 10th five-year plan ( 2006-2010).

Later, a deep discussion was held on the ongoing economic issues, particularly the financial and monetary policies, income rates, unemployment and labor market policies.

In this context, President al-Assad ordered the Group to outline a mechanism to create a data system for the labor market in Syria that achieves linkage between supply and demand.

Talks also dealt with issues of the administrative development, adopting principle of competition and competence at work, in addition to issues of salaries and wages. In this regard, al-Assad ordered the Group to form a work team to put mechanisms that assess performance of work.
