Morocco and Mexico review consolidation of economic ties
Morocco-Mexico, Politics, 10/26/2004
Consolidation of economic ties was the focus of a meeting held here this Monday between Moroccan minister-delegate for foreign affairs and cooperation, Taib Fassi Fihri, and visiting deputy-foreign minister, Maria de Lourdes Aranda Bezaury.
Talks covered "relations between our two countries, which share several similarities and experiences in the reinforcement of the rule of law, economic reforms and conclusion of free trade agreements," said the Mexican official.
Mexico has free trade agreements with the USA, Canada, the European Union, Japan and over thirty other countries.
The Moroccan official told reporters the meeting also reviewed the evolution of multilateralism and the aspired reforms in the UNO and the security council, in addition to other topical Mediterranean issues, the situation in Iraq and in the Middle East and the evolution of the Maghreb, particularly the Sahara issue and the need to reach "a political solution that caters for Moroccan sovereignty in order to build the Arab Maghreb Union."
The Arab Maghreb Union, known by its French acronym "UMA," was set in 1989 by Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. The grouping has, however, been stalled to divergences between Morocco and Algeria, due to this latter's direct support to the Polisario, a group claiming the separation from the rest of Morocco of the Sahara.
The Mexican deputy-foreign minister, who is paying a two day-visit to Morocco, will attend a series of cultural activities held by the Mexican embassy in Rabat, particularly the opening of a Mexican library in Rabat, and meet members of the diplomatic corps in Morocco.
Her agenda also includes a meetings with Moroccan businessmen.
