Haaretz: Israel might accept Egyptian proposal to deploy forces in Sinai
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 10/26/2004

Israel is inclined to accept the Egyptian proposal to deploy reinforcements of the border guards forces on the border with the aim to prevent smuggling of weapons via tunnels of Rafah to Gaza.

The Israeli daily Haaretz quoted Israeli political sources as saying that "the Egyptian proposal is serious and it is evident that it is in need to be tried." However, the paper said that the Israeli final position has not been finalized yet and Egypt was not notified of any stand.

Several days ago, Israel received a proposal from Egypt to this end in the meeting of the joint security committee by the beginning of this month. The paper added that the proposal indicates the possibility of sending two contingents from the Egyptian border guards of 750 troops to Sinai and those soldiers only carry personal weapons and move within armored vehicles.
