Morocco hails Chile's stance on Sahara issue

Morocco's ambassador to Chile, Abdelhadi Boucetta, hailed, in Buenos Aires Thursday, Chile's stance on Sahara issue, at a meeting with Chilean secretary of States for Foreign Affairs, Cristian Barros.

The Moroccan diplomat also praised the abstention of Chile, on Monday, to vote on the Algerian draft resolution on the Sahara presented to the UN fourth committee.

The vote was marked by the abstention of 89 UN members out of 191. Only 52 voted for the draft resolution, while 50 did not take part in the vote.

The national and international media described the vote as a "diplomatic victory" for Morocco in its dispute with the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists that are claiming the secession of the Moroccan southern provinces, known as the Sahara.

Chile, a non-permanent member in the Security Council, has enough elements to be confident in the legitimacy of the Moroccan cause, said diplomatic sources.

The meeting between Boucetta and the Chilean official comes in the eve of the visit of Barros next week to Morocco.

Bilateral cooperation was also discussed at the meeting.
