King Mohammed launches 7th nationwide solidarity campaign
Morocco, Culture, 10/23/2004

Morocco's King Mohammed VI launched this Friday the 7th nationwide solidarity campaign, an annual campaign to collect funds and donations from individuals and companies and carry out development projects for the most unprivileged categories of the Moroccan society.

Presenting the foundation's activities for 2004, Royal advisor and member of the foundation's administrative board, Zoulika Nasri, said the institution has carried out various sets of activities, building on the experience of the 5 last years.

The first axis of its action consisted in bringing emergency aid to victims of natural catastrophes (floods and quake), supplying food to the poorest people, conducting medical campaigns to the benefit of people in a difficult situation and those living in remote areas, and lend a human touch to the return of Moroccan expatriates who come home for summer holidays.

The second axis lies in contributing to the schooling of poor children, providing them with schoolbags and school manuals and fighting school dropping, especially among rural girls. In this context 12 new dorms for rural girls were opened.

Addressing the problems faced by women in rural areas and in poorly-equipped urban areas was another field where the foundation was active. Literacy courses and vocational training sessions were among the actions undertaken in this regard.

Regarding youth, the foundation has built training, educational, sports and cultural centers. In 2004, 16 of these centers were made available to the youth, while handicapped youth benefited from 5 centers where they are given an adapted vocational training to help their integration in the economic and professional life.

As regards the third axis, it concerns lasting development which the Foundation endeavoured to promote by supplying drinking water to rural areas, developing small farming projects, building rural roads and encouraging income-generating productive units.

The report presented by Nasri also insists that the foundation has been working in partnership with local associations and populations.

The sovereign was also presented with the charter signed by the associations solidarity forum, a space to debate all issues related to sustainable development and problems facing the most vulnerable populations, especially children, women and handicapped persons. The forum seeks to engrain the values of solidarity and citizenship through the associations and the consolidation of community action by supporting local associations, reinforcing their human resources, improving their internal organization and encouraging their rational management.

Then a group of children presented to the sovereign drawings made during the "Space of children painting" organized for children of the Moroccan community living in France.

The King then granted solidarity medals leaders of associations in recognition for distinguished work in the field of social action and handed donations to some associations.

The ceremony was held in the presence Mrs Bernadette Chirac, spouse of the French president, and sheik Sayed Tantaoui, the Imam of Al-Azhar university of Cairo.
