Algeria suffers 'unprecedented severe blow' since start of Sahara conflict, daily
Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 10/22/2004

Algeria suffered "an unprecedented severe blow since the start of the Sahara conflict" after the majority in the UN General Assembly 4th committee voiced reservation regarding the Algerian draft resolution on the Sahara issue, Algerian "Al Akhbar" daily said Wednesday.

In a story titled "Algerian diplomacy stumbles in UN," the daily said the failure of Algeria to get the backing of member states, made it lose the support of three fourth of the international community which is regarded by observers as "an unprecedented severe blow since the start of the Sahara conflict."

The high number of abstentions and the absence of other members at the vote reflect little support to Algeria within days of the publication of the new report on the peace plan by UNSG special representative, the daily said. The newspaper reports the concern of former Algerian ambassador to Madrid, Abdelaziz Rehabi, who voiced fear that "Algeria could be confronted to surprises in the Security Council by the end of the month in addition to what have happened in the 4th committee."

For its part, "Al Hayat" daily (Cairo edition) said Algeria was slapped on the face at the United Nations after the majority of the 4th committee member abstained at the vote on the draft resolution on the Sahara.

Out of the 191 UN members, only 52 voted for the draft, while 89 abstained and 50 did not take part in the vote.
