Demonstration in Manama demanding the release of al-Khawaja
Bahrain, Politics, 10/22/2004
Demonstrators took the streets in Manama demanding the release of activist Abdul Hadi al-Khawaja, who is detained under the charge of "provoking hatred of the regime."
Some 2000 persons on Thursday walked from Raas al-Rouman to the east of the Bahraini capital Manama to the headquarters of the government chanting slogans calling for the release of al-Khawaja who has been detained since the end of September and the resignation of the prime minister Sheikh Khaleifa Bin Salman al-Khaleifa.
The second minor criminal court decided on Wednesday to postpone al-Khawaja trial until October 25th after his second trial session during which limited clashes took place between the security forces and protesters gathered outside the headquarters of the court.
The Bahraini authorities detained al-Khawaja after he had delivered a lecture about poverty in Bahrain in which he accused officials of "violating the authority." Al-Ouroba Club which hosted the lecture was closed temporarily.
