Saudi Arabia, Local, 10/21/2004

Riyadh expected that some one million of residents in Saudi Arabia to benefit from amending the nationalilty law, which permits within other conditions to give Saudi nationality to those who have been staying for ten years in the Kingdom.

The secretary of the ministry of the interior, Naser Bin Hamad al-Hanaya said in a statement issued by the Saudi daily Okaz yesterday that the jobs the country needs, which were stated in the amendment as a precondition to get the nationality are in medicine, physics, sciences and Computer and the IT. He added that the executive list of amending the nationality law will be issued within a four- month period of time in preparation to debate applications for getting the Saudi nationality.

On the other hand, the Saudi daily al-Watan quoted officials at the ministry of the interior that the Saudi amended nationality law which is approved by the Saudi cabinet will not be applicable on the Palestinian residents in Saudi Arabia, who are carrying Arab and foreign nationalities and their number is estimated at 500,000. The officials said that this comes in line with the directives of the Arab league in not to give nationality of settle Palestinians residents in Arab states in an attempt to prevent melting the Palestinian identity and in preserving their rights to return back to their lands.
