Sahara issue tops Moroccan political leader's talks in Berlin
Morocco-Germany, Politics, 10/20/2004

The Sahara issue topped the talks held here on Monday by first secretary of the Moroccan USFP party (socialist union of popular forces), Mohamed El Yazghi, and leaders of the German social democrat party (SPD), including the SPD first secretary Franz Muentefering.

The USFP top official expounded to the leader of the German party the latest developments in the Sahara issue, insisting that Morocco remains attached to "a political and negotiated settlement to be reached through frank dialogue with Algeria, on the basis of Morocco's sovereignty over the southern Sahara provinces."

El Yazghi also evoked the upcoming congress of the international socialist (IS) to be hosted by Johannesburg next November after South Africa recognized the Sahara-republic, self proclaimed by the Algeria-backed Polisario separatist movement.

According to members of El Yazghi's delegation, the SPD reassured them that South Africa's recognition of the puppet republic will not have any incidence on the IS proceedings and that the SPD will see to it that the IS council's stance on the Moroccan Sahara will be the same as the one adopted during the Sao Paulo congress (2002) and that insists on the quest of a political solution through dialogue between the parties.

The SPD leader also stressed that South Africa's decision to recognise the Sahara republic is an internal affair of the South African government and the African National Congress.
