British forces change positions in Iraq
Iraq-UK, Military, 10/20/2004

Due to the deteriorated security conditions in central and northern Iraq, the British defense office has drawn the final touches to transfer its forces from Basra, to the south of Baghdad, at the request of Washington to help in alleviating the risks the American forces are facing in the areas which witness violent confrontations with gunmen.

The British Foreign office secretary Jack Straw said yesterday that his country will most expectedly comply with the American request to deploy British forces near Baghdad, unless the British military leadership opposes that. But he explained that Britain will disappoint its alley if it responded negatively to the request.

British opposition leaders, press and families of soldiers expressed their fear of exposing the British forces to additional risks by getting greatly involved in an American war that is greatly opposed in Britain.
