Darfur rebels accuse Tripoli summit of being biased to Khartoum
Sudan-Libya, Politics, 10/19/2004

Darfur's rebels rejected the results of the five-member summit held in Tripoli which in turn had rejected pressure on Khartoum and and any international intervention in the crisis and called on the two rebel movements to sign the Abuja humanitarian protocol.

The spokesman for al-Adel Wal-Musawat ( justice and equity) Ahmad Hussein Adam accused in a press statement the summit of being biased to the Sudanese government and adopting Khartoum's view points in the negotiations.

Adam considered that the five leaders did not provide alternative solutions to settle the crisis by their rejection of the international interference. He also accused the government of being responsible for the failure of signing the humanitarian protocol by its rejection in implementing its elements which cover dismantling of Jagaweid militias weapons and achieving security stability in the region. He stressed that despite of that, the process which the two rebel movements embark on is Abuja's negotiations due to be resumed on October 21, noting the need of Khartoum implementation of the UN Security Council demands.

Meantime, the Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismail commended the results of the summit and said it has addressed a message to the international community "stressing that Africa wants to shoulder its full responsibility and refuses any foreign intervention."

The mini-African summit has fully achieved its targets, Ismail told reporters following the summit which concluded late Sunday night.

The summit pressed for a comprehensive solution in accordance with the Abuja agreement, covering humanitarian, political, security and socio-economic aspects away from foreign intervention, Ismail said.

The international community should give the opportunity to the African Union to solve the west Sudan crisis and help Sudan through extending further aid to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, the Sudanese official added.

Participants in the summit, he said, agreed to hold the summit periodically to follow up the issue.
