Al-Taye accuses Libya of a coupe attempt
Mauritania-Libya, Politics, 10/18/2004

President of Mauritania M'aweya Weld al-Taye accused, for the first time, Libya and Burkina Faso of being involved in the coupe attempts against his regime and described these attempts as "criminal conspiracies."

In a speech broadcast by the Mauritania TV and radio on the occasion of the beginning of Ramadan, Weld Taye said that Libya and Burkina Faso are working to carry out " criminal conspiracies " against Mauritania through "financing, training and arming terrorist groups." He said these conspiracies were doomed to failure and will fail in the future."

Meantime, the spiritual leader of the Mauritania Islamic movement, Sheikh Muhammad al-Hassan Weld al-Dodou, and two of his political companions, Jamil Weld mansour and Mukhtar Weld Muhammad Mousa, accused the authorities in Mauritania of distorting their image after they were detained in the course of investigations related to the coupe attempt and were released since two days.

The three Islamists said on Saturday "the authority wanted to distort our image and the image of other figures among the opposition members through accusing us of contacting the 'Knights for the change'" -- a Mauritanian opposition front works in exile.

On the other hand, representatives for the "parliamentary society committee for the NATO and the Mediterranean dialogue" which is a NATO program in Nouakchott, started works of a three-day forum on "security and development." The " dialogue," the initiative of NATO in 1994, aims at encouraging understanding and confidence in the Mediterranean. It includes Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. Algeria joined it in 2000. Libya was invited to take part in the forum but no Libyan representative has attended in what seems a reflection of the tense relations between Libya and Mauritania.
