Regional-USA, Politics, 10/18/2004

The national Evangelical Synod in Syria and Lebanon currently host a delegation of the consultative committee for social and political testimony in the American Presbyterian Church for the purpose of briefing churches in the West on conditions and circumstances which the region is passing through.

"The committee task is to prepare studies and research on social and political issues in order to pass them to the General Assembly of the American Presbyterian Church in the United States to adopt and defend them," Secretary General of the National Evangelical Synod in Syria Joseph Qassab said on Sunday in a statement.

" The Middle East topic always was among the raised issues where the General Assembly has adopted several decisions and stances that support the Arab cause and call for peace in the region." Qassab added pointing out to the decision recently issued by the assembly on boycott of the US companies that have dealings with Israeli companies.

He noted that the church will stop contributions of members of the church in those companies. " In spite of pressure of the Jewish-American Lobby, the church stressed commitment to this decision as long as Israel is practicing violence against the Palestinians." He mentioned.

Qassab underlined that the Presbyterian Church in the United States calls for ending the Israeli occupation of the Arab lands.

The delegation of the American Presbyterian Church, which comprises of 25 persons, is scheduled to hold meetings and pay visits to a number of political, civil and religious activities in Syria and Lebanon.
