Sahara Moroccanity a constant postulate of the Kingdom, Prime minister
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 10/16/2004

The Moroccanity of the Sahara is one of the constant postulate of the Kingdom, King, government and people, insisted Moroccan Premier, Driss Jettou adding that in the Sahara "we are on our territory, among our citizens, full of our attachment to national constancies..."

Jettou told a meeting, held in Laayoune on Thursday, on the fringes of the first session of the governing board of the Agency for the promotion and economic and social development of the Kingdom's Southern provinces, Moroccan national constancies are unavoidable, backed by "the legality of our historical rights and our unswerving attachment to the glorious Alawit throne."

The Moroccan Premier reiterated the will of Morocco to frustrate any manoeuvres plotted by the enemies of Morocco's territorial integrity, underscoring that the Kingdom remains committed to seeking a political and consensual solution to the Sahara dispute.

The three-decade regional dispute is opposing Morocco to the Polisario guerrilla movement that is claiming the secession of the southern region of Morocco, known as the Sahara. Algeria is the main supporter of the Polisario secessionists and provides them with logistic, military and diplomatic assistance

He also stressed the will of Morocco to carry on the process of the development and building undertaken in the Southern provinces, adding the cohesion of the internal front and its mobilisation with King Mohammed VI is the best way to thwart the attempt to harm Moroccan sovereignty.

For his part, Moroccan interior minister, Al Mostafa Sahel, reiterated, at the same meeting, the constant attachment of Morocco to a consensual solution to the Sahara issue which respects national sovereignty and territorial unity of the Kingdom.

Sahel said Morocco has always been initiating positive initiatives and taking courageous stances to reach a political solution to the Sahara dispute.

He said Morocco's sincere will to persevere on a peaceful path does by no means mean any weakness, for the country is resolutely keen on legitimately defending national sovereignty. Sahel said Morocco chose a regionalisation policy as the sole way to development and progress based on democracy that enables Moroccan Southern provinces'energies contribute to the economic and social development of these regions.

The Moroccan official pointed out to the authentic local cultural heritage of the Southern provinces which is one of the affluents of the national culture, noting however cultural diversity must not be used to hurt the foundation of the sacred values of the Moroccans or serve as propaganda to secession.

He praised the position and actions, whether at the local or international levels, of the Sahrawis who have thwarted the manoeuvres of the enemies of Morocco's territorial unity giving the country more strength to take up challenges within a united Morocco.
